Character: Deity Name: Isis Pantheon: Egyptian/Roman Current Alias: Stella Marie, taken from one of the many titles of Isis, meaning Star of the Sea Apparent Age: 29 Occupation: Forensic anthropologist. While Osiris's mortal occupation is forensic pathology, dealing with how a person died, Isis' study focuses on who the person was. She is useful in cases where victims are unrecognizable due to trauma. Her skills in finding and reassembling her husband come in handy when recreating the human skeleton for her job.
Personality: Isis is independent, first and foremost. She is undoubtedly the strongest female deity in Egypt, and her cult was widespread. Her personality reflects that. She's proud, confidant, and self-assured. She has few friends but those few are treasured. She is intensely loyal and she holds a grudge. She thinks from the head rather than the heart; both in her work (obviously) and her personal life. If something is unrealistic, she'll get over it. She's the opposite of quixotic. Romanticism is not something she thinks about.
She has a high moral sense, but not to the point of prudishness. She's not cold, or unresponsive when it comes to godly duties, because she's seen to be the helper of everyone from slaves to emperors, but she won't waste her time on people she thinks unworthy of her help. Her weaknesses come from her past -- she doesn't want to clean up any more bits and pieces of Osiris. She's also afraid of fish and alligators. Her strengths come from her confidence -- she can get things done on her own, and she's not afraid to be alone in something, whether it be an emotional struggle or a physical task.
She usually works alone, speaking to her coworkers rarely, and only when necessary. She takes pride in her work, and enjoys it, especially because it is so similar to her godly duties. Isis is not a jealous woman, because she is so self-assured. To the outside eye, she would seem an intelligent, withdrawn, capable young woman fortunate to have a steady career. She takes care of her appearance, liking to impress. Her vanity shines through in how she looks, the form of an exotically attractive young woman is not precisely how the weathered Queen of the Dead would look, but she enjoys the frailty of youth, since it's the only frailty about her self that she acknowledges.
History: Isis was a loving, independant, capable woman who helped colonize Egypt with her husband-brother, Osiris. She took in her sister's illegitamate child before having her own. After both of Osiris' murders, she helped put him back together and assure his place as god of the dead. She was regarded as the giver of bread, beer, and life. Her cult, specifically the ideas of her divine and supreme motherhood, spread from Egypt to Greece, and influenced many early Christians. Early images of her nursing her son, Horus, were adopted to depict Mary nursing the infant Jesus. The Virgin Mary's association with the blue dress, the title 'Stella Maris' (star of the sea) , the reference to the Mother of God, and the symbol of the crescent moon were all borrowed from the cult of Isis. (Don't Know Much About Mythology by Kenneth C. Davis, page 88) Her emigration to New York came in the form of new discoveries in Egypt, reminders of the religion that had been cast aside in favor of trends. She had remained a ghostly rendering of her former self in the belief of Mary for centuries, the Rosetta Stone's translation adding fuel to her dwindling fire , but after Tutankhamun's tomb was discovered and priceless treasures shipped around the world, her strength returned. As Egypt-fever gripped the early 1900s, Isis settled in New York, with a will to contribute to humanity. She has mixed feelings about humans, though they thought her into existence, they almost thought her out again, so she's a bit bitter about that.
